FROM THE SPICE ISLANDS TO SULAWESI: SAILING THE UNDISCOVERED FRONTIER

Travel with Seatrek Sailing Adventures from the ancient spice capital of Ternate to the shipbuilding port of Bitung in North Sulawesi as we explore the islands and seas that fringe the Molucca Sea. Not only does this brand-new itinerary have an extended cruise programme of 14 days, it also packages so many highlights in the one journey such as birds of paradise, black-crested macaques, remote island cultures, rare maleo birds, Bajau sea gypsies, exotic birdlife, volcanic peaks, and ample opportunity for snorkelling on fantastic coral reefs and in lakes filled with freshwater jellyfish in what is one of the remotest and least visited parts of the Indonesian archipelago.

WHAT WILL YOU SEE?

The trip offers the best of Maluku and Sulawesi all in the one cruise, and will include many wildlife and cultural highlights:

- Jungle trekking on Bacan Island in search of the Golden Birdwing Butterfly, the world;s largest, as discovered by Alfred Russel Wallace.

- Encounter the Wallace Standardwing bird of paradise in the wild along with many other endemic bird species.

- Swim in not one, but two, stingless-jellyfish lakes.

- Visiting remote villages and meeting the local people and experiencing their way of life.

- Seeing the fascinating, flightless maleo bird in its natural habitat.

- Swim with Bangaii Cardinal Fish, one of the aquarium trade's most sought after species.

- Visit the remote and hard-to-access Togean Island group, and be witness to huge flights of hornbills coming into roost

- See tarsiers and black-crested macaques in the Tangkoko National Park..

- Snorkel on some of the most remote reefs Indonesia has to offer.

- All this in addition to the joy of spending 14 days at sea on one of our traditional pinisi ships enjoying our unique SeaTrek hospitality.

WHY BITUNG?

We chose Bitung for its close proximity to Manado City, with its international airport and great domestic access from Bali and Jakarta. Ternate is just 50 minutes by morning flight from Manado, meaning we can be under sail by lunchtime. Having Manado as an entry and exit point also opens up many other exotic attractions that can be done before or after your cruise, including:

- Dive the spectacular reefs of Bukanen National Park.

- Visit the Tangkoko National Park, with it's amazing wildlife including tarsiers and black-crested macaques.

- Stay at the Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Centre, with their many species of rescue animals (including orangutans), while participating in the feeding and looking after of these creatures. They are also located adjacent to a long stretch of beach, which are protected turtle nesting grounds and offer many opportunities for experiencing this wonder of nature.

- SeaTrek will be only too happy to help make arrangements for you to visit.
