Video: Whale Hunters in Lamalera

This is Lamalera, a village of 2,000 people and one of the last communities to hunt sperm whales in the traditional way, with harpoons and ropes. Once a year, when whales migrate past their shores, they head out in their small outrigger boats to try to catch a few to sustain the people throughout the year. SeaTrek recently organised a recreation of the ‘leap’ for guests on the Ombak Putih, when one of their experienced hunters launches what he hopes will be a fatal blow to the mighty beast. *No whales were harmed in the making of this video.
