The Moluccas are the original Spice Islands; a magical destination, beautiful, remote and unspoiled, with a long, fascinating and turbulent history. For millennia these fertile volcanic isles were the world’s only source of the ‘holy trinity’ of rare spices; cloves, nutmeg and mace, which were once worth their weight in gold. Be transported back in time on our expert-led cruise as we wend our way through dramatic volcanic islands interspersed with stops at pristine white-sand beaches. Relish the opportunity to swim and snorkel in waters rich in marine life. Learn about the colonial history of Indonesia and its role in the international spice trade during the 17th century; visit historic outposts and colourful island villages; experience the marketplaces and inhale the aroma of the spice plantations…

These two cruises will each be led by Dr. Lawrence Blair and Jeffrey Mellefont, expert historians and authors with boundless knowledge of the spice trade and the maritime history and culture of Indonesia.

The Experts' Advice

In addition to sharing his in-depth knowledge of the areas we visit and the Spice Trade, Lawrence will be delivering a series of talks throughout the cruise on the following topics:

  • A New Look at Indonesia - What you won't learn from the history books.
  • Strange Beasts of the Archipelago - The last new frontiers of the natural sciences.
  • The Great Deeps - Plumbing the last frontier, and what we might learn in the shallows
  • Other Minds - Magic, mysticism and religions from the perspective of psycho-anthropology.

Note: The price of this cruise does not include any domestic airfares to and from our start and end points, however, our reservations specialists in Bali are more than happy to help arrange domestic flights on your behalf and advise on scheduling. We book hundreds of flights each year on behalf of our guests and we know the best routes to take to ensure you arrive on time. We only book with IATA-approved airlines that have met with international standards of safety and dependability. Except for Bali, transfers to and from local airports to the boat are also included. If you are booking flights by yourself, please do not book any flights before checking with us first. Our first and last day programmes rely on strict time scheduling, so please confirm with us to ensure that you arrive and depart at your destination with plenty of time to spare and to avoid disruption to other guests' schedules.
